'The Great Dictator' movie review

On the day of 30th June we saw a movie named ‘The Great Dictator’ this is Political satire comedy drama written, directed, produced and starring by Charlie Chaplin, this was his first true sound movie, released in 1940.  Time of movie is period between two world war, it’s reflect real picture of America. The technologization of the world and life has resulted in massive environmental and socio-political problems.

Charlie plays a double roles first one is persecuted Jewish Barber and another is ruthless fascist dictator. Here the word fascist suggest that movie have very controversial condemnation of Adolf Hitler, Fascism and the Narsis. As fascist believe in liberal democracy and saw first world war as revolution, revolution which brought massive changes to the nature of war, society, the state and technology.

In the very beginning of movie there is scene of war in which our hero Charlie, in role of Jewish barber fighting for his nation Tomania and unknowingly saves the life of  wounded pilot but, in midway their plane crashes and barber loses his memory, twenty years later he returns to his previous profession as a barber in the Ghetto their he falls in love with his neighbor Hannah.

Meanwhile Hynkel another role of Charlie is busy on improving his power in dictatorship through increasing armaments. He takes decisions foolishly and put innocent people in great trouble, trouble like their craftsmanship and daily lives. We can say that the voice of Authority was accepted in religion in politics in literature and in family life.

There is one scene in movie that Hynkel plays with globe and enjoying himself as he feels great delight in this but unconsciously balloon explode, ironically Charlie shows that powerful people carelessly plays with emotions of layman.

Last speech by Charlie in movie in mouth of Barber is very universal fact speech. “The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish. …..” this vey hopeful and liberal idea.

So the whole image of movie is not as much negative but in comic way Charlie presents the scenario of his time. In one line one can say that… A Jewish barber loses his memory after a plane crash in war, when he finally tries to make sense of his surroundings, he finds himself subjected to a dictator’s tyranny. Barber’s whole life spent in search of better tomorrow and a peaceful life with Hannah.

As we see that Charlie captured reality of that time and serve bitter guard with sugar! Modern critics have also praised it as a historically significant film and an important work of satire.
