Vocabulary Drill

Vocabulary is necessary factor for improving our lnguage. The richer is the vocabulary , the more accurate is our language. With the change of time or in this digital era language become a important part of day to day communication and in this many new words take place in routine communication. Example is that Laptop become Lepi, Roomate become Roomie etc.,

Here, i try to find some new words in my presentation...

Waiting...

World will never understand your silence...
Why we should or we have to prove our self to other to world...?
By silence we are not proving our self genius...
then what we are doing with words...
Words..Words..Words..  illusion in world?
Or mere reality?
Words are..
Nauseous of fakeness
Bombast with emotions
Sewage of undigested religious pomp
Though...
we blowing triumphe  of it?
Magniloquence in name of pride
Mask under the mask
Where am I ?
What is my purpose here…?
Just killing time…?
Gaming with self?
Or waiting for Godot...

Session with Dr.Jay Mehta

We have often guest lectures  in our English Department MKBU. In this our Head of Department invite  various Professors  from  other universities. Same tradition From 18th to 22september we have Dr. Jay Mehta Sir’s lecture on Edger Allen Poe’s short stories. But, Dr. Jay Mehta is not a guest, he is one of gems from our English Department MKBU. He is like a family member of our Department. Right now He is Lecturer  at  R.C.. Technical College Ahmedabad.

Here, I wanna show my experience of learning under him. Basically his subject was Edger Allen’s Short story, which is totally different from Poetic. But, he teach us Poe with use of various examples of poems. His style of beginning of class is an amazing, it catches the attention of everyone in class. In this four days, He has talked about Poe’s  short stories like…

1) The Tell Tale Heart
2) The Black Cat
3) The Fall of the House of Usher
4) The Cask of Amontillado
5) The Purloined Letter
6) The Gold Bug

And Last Session on Poems and Poets of Gujarati/Hindi  Literature.
Normally He starts his session with reciting poetic lines and writing a quote on board. On the very first day he wrote on board that, ‘ The theories we believe, we call them facts and the facts we disbelieve, we call them theories.’ And then he entered in talk about Father of detective stories ( Edger Allen Poe). And give  A comparative psychological  exploration of selected stories of Poe.

So, with the Poe’s horror, terror, fear, bloodshed, burying lie, macabre and various psychological abnormalities, we feel pleasure of poetry. Poe is master of ‘Tales of  mystery and imagination’. Two types of short story he writes 1.Tales of horror and terror. 2Tales of ratiocination. Poe’s use of word shows he is accurate in using vocabulary and reading of original stories through Sir’s mouth we really feel Poe’s sharpness against sense.
‘Man Fear to death as children fears darkness’

Element of Fear is in center of all the stories. Psychological analysis with Freud’s theories like over consciousness, OCD- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, PS- Paranoid Schizophrenia, sadism and machoism, Neurosis, Psychosis, Freudian slip means…’It’s never slip of tongue  it’s slip of mind, and many other things like weakness and grey area of human mind and cultural Consciousness etc., Point of Gothic literature and element of it in Poe’s writing is also well described by Sir. This universal significance in Stories of Poe shows the permanence value because before Freud or development of psychology Poe wrote all this thing metaphorically in his writing.

After learning Poe’s six stories from Sir, we can characterize Poe as...

-Writer of Diction language
-Autobiographical elements in his writing
- Great creator of suspense in writing
- Inner conflict in characterization
- Balance in head and heart
- He brings the poetic in short stories
- Death and darkness of human mind is major theme
- Tone of melancholy and sadness
- Singularity of effect
-.A skillful artist

Along with Poe and his selected Short stories, our last lecture on Poets and poem at the last day. And it’s really an unforgettable lecture. In this Session we talked about various poets and we presented our own creating writing also. I presented my Gujarati poem ‘યાતના’ and got વાહવાહ in sir’s comment. I feel Sir’s personal experiences of life would bitter or not like a Climbing of stairways but like a mountain. But as Sir said in his class that…

” If you born for write..
Where are your tear?

Thus, I found Jay sir is also an a wonderful Writer…his two poem ‘હુ જાતે જાદુગર’, ‘અંતરનો  Hamlet’  both are fabulous. And his memory power is surprising He recite a many lines of Gujarati, Hindi and English poems. He introduce several poet in front of us for reading poems like…Ramesh Parekh, Anil Chavda, Khalil Dhantejvi, Suresh Joshi, Saumay Joshi, Dushyant Kumar,Miskkn, Irshad, Galib, Gulzar, Harivanshray Bachhan, Rahet Indori, Amrut Ghayal, Esha Dadawala, Gani Dahiwala  and many others. In addition he gave information about various application and website useful for reading literature in various languages.

Websites for Gujarati songs and poems
2.Rankar
4.Jalso Application
Other Facebook page like…
-Shabdmehfil
-Shodhganga

At last I want to end this with one line spoken by Jay Sir… ‘Every Good things going to end.’ But ultimate truth is we met and apart For meet another time… as spring meet to leaf.!

Sir is big fan of Gulzar and i want to end my blog with Gulzar's poem...

Reflection of Balaji Sir's Lecture

Professor Balaji Ranganathan an extreme learned scholar and gifted by teaching skill.  He is from Central University of Gujarat. Our Professor  Dr.Dilip Barad has invited him in our Department of English MKBU. and it’s really very beneficial for us. Balaji Sir has deal with post colonial literature. In the very beginning of his session he informed that era of colonialism is dead and study of post colonial literature is also have more trouble some and It’s almost gone now. We are in an era of Globalization. World moves toward new inventions It means not only that he is negative toward this subject. He very interestingly teach us on the all points which is in our syllabus of post colonial studies paper. Broadness in his thinking give us new visions.

In these three days he gone through many topics like,
1) Frantz Fanon’s Black skin white mask
2) Edward Said’s Orientalism
3) Amie Cesaire’s A Tempest
4) Salman Rushdie’s Imaginary Homelands and several other essays…( Commonwealth Literature, On Palestine,  The New Empire within Britain an Unimportant fire home front)
Major ideas which I liked most from three days session.
Idea of State and Nation.
First he entered in subject with beautiful connection of State and Nation. State have  fixed  geography, always structured by governance, parliament or dictatorship. And nation us imagination Nation can not be fixed in reality. Visualization of nation changes time to time.
New Humanism
What is means human? Human is not who have only  thinking power reason is that Dolphin and chimpanzees also has a self consciousness. Human is who have material development, language and technology. And humanism is that larger inclusive philosophy; higher state of awareness and New Humanism is free from binary.
(in discussion of this point, I come to know about Balaji Sir’s deep  knowledge of Archelogy. And his interesting research on this)

Colonial Binary
What does a man want? What does the black man want?
This kind of question shows binary and Binary being an important part of colonialism and color or gender discrimination. Strong connection between the gender binary and colonialism. Historical sense of superiority it’s not racial biological sense like black and white same with Britishers, that is coloring their life and it’s create problem.

Middle class mentality
Middle class, not rich not poor. What they are doing?  Nothing much just struggling for existing and try to show everyone how good they are in their culture, in a way custodians of fake rules of society. They are living  in well and never has seen an ocean. Balaji sir has said that revolution will never emerged from middle class society. They are like Trishanku, in between, just hanging. They also don’t try to change their status and that’s why Balaji sir has said that, intellectual alienation is a creation of middle class society.

Desire  Conflict
Desires are the motives of life. Desire constructs life and our behave.  Desires are good and bad but without desire life is sunny desert. There is theory based on desire conflict.
(+ +) Approach Approach conflict
(+ -) Approach Avoidance conflict
(- -) Avoidance avoidance  conflict
1. Able to achieve desire
2. No possibility of resolution
2. Desire and reality never goes to meet.

These are the major points which I liked most throughout of his three days session. His idea on philosophy and spiritualty inspires me a lot. His style pf answering to student’s question reflects his knowledge on various topics. To make class interactive or live he also ask Interesting questions like,    How would you construct your presence,? What is your views on rebel and revolution? And idea of presence that  We  live in nostalgia of past because Past take place of your present anxiety.
So, that’s all brief about  Balaji Sir’s lecture….

Pre-thinking Activity.

Pre-thinking Activity. On given blog

http://jaynmehta.blogspot.com/2018/09/passion-perversity-and-poe-introduction.html?m=1

"Questions:-
01. Recollect a moment of your life when you were at the height of ferocity (anger) on someone with/without some specific reason. What did you feel like speaking to or doing with that person?

I am very short temper in case of anger. Though as I’m growing , I’m trying  depress it. I remember one day when I was in school. As I returned home from school I saw ‘Thank you Sticker’ on mirror and I was furious. Reason is only that sticker given by my friend to me. And I want to save it as it is. But, my mamma didn’t know anything and without any hesitance or my permission she gluing on mirror. I was very angry on her. She promise me for more new sticker yet I was crying  and Shouting on her.

02. Have you ever felt tremendous drive to hit or murder someone? When? Why? How? Elucidate.

Yes, sometime hatred overflows in me same as love or any other feelings when I found some people very egoist. It is reality that they are not able to do any good or notable work in their entire life, though behave like king of their illusionary land. So, I felt tremendous drive to hit or murder that kind of people. In answer of when is whenever I got chance! And how? By hitting them.

03. Have you ever felt like committing suicide? Was it just a passing thought or you were serious? What propelled you to think so? Describe your experience (although momentary) of suicidal tendency.

Still I can not judge that maturity comes with age Or not. But, as I’m growing, I feel that I’m mature than yesterday. And in this process of maturing, I came out from taboos or prejudices created by me. Though, I’m learning to live, somewhere in past the idea of suicide passed as trace on my mind. When I feel everything is lost. A beautiful line of my school day’s prayer inspires me, was that…
વાટ વચ્ચે ભરાયા અંગો આળસથી મારા…વધે નહિ આગળ પગ મારા…
But, another interrogative makes me able to stand that What I have? Which I lost. Answer is nothing.

04. Write about the scariest of your dreams. Have you ever cried or screamed by a bizarre and horrible nightmare? Elaborate.

My sleep is mostly calm but whenever I remember about my dream in morning I found it’s strange. No connection of events. In addition when I googled on it, It has some meanings. But, I didn’t remember such nightmare in my life which makes me cried or screamed.

05. Do you believe in ghosts? Have you ever undergone any experience of supernatural elements? Explain.

Well. I am not believe in ghost and I never experienced it. But I believe in some super natural element, an extreme power.  I think that there is nothing like Ghost or God. Ghost with bad or negative traces on our mind and God with good and positive, supernatural energy. .

To The Lighthouse Thinking Activity.

The story of the novel is quite simple, and can be told briefly. The lighthouse that shines out at night surrounded by sea and distance from the island of Skye. Where the Ramsay’s summer House stand. But the way events portrait by Woolf is considerable her style of writing and narrative makes novel modern novel.

Here, I’m going to discuss some particular ideas of novel To the light house. Which is asked in Thinking Activity as part of our (Dept. Of Eng. MKBU) self learning module.

1)How can you explain that 'what' Virginia Woolf wanted to say (for example, the complexity of human relationship, the everyday battles that people are at in their relationship with near and dear ones, the struggle of a female artist against the values of middle/upper class society etc.) can only be said in the way she has said? (Key: The 'How' of the narrative technique is to be discussed along with features of Stream of Consciousness technique which helps Woolf to put in effective manner what she experienced in abstractions.)

There is no murder, blood shed, violence, mystery, no long lost heirs and not lustrous events in novel. As a matter of fact ‘To the light house’ is not conventional novel. It break with the 19th century tradition of the English novel. It is “Stream of consciousness” novel. Virginia Woolf has freely exploited the interior monologues of the different characters.

However, To the light house differs from the other “stream of consciousness” novels in the fact that a central intelligence- the novelist, as narrator is always at work shifting, selecting and organizing. As David Daiches points out , “ there is a careful weaving together of characters’ consciousness, author’s comments, and one character’s view of another. Thus, To the light house is series of events and narrated by multiple angel and Woolf in order to capture the inner reality, truth about life, she has tried to represent the moving current of  life and individual’s consciousness. outside and inside happening things makes novel curious novel.

She has used stream of consciousness technique, but she has not used it consistently throughout. The interior monologues of the different characters are given, but the central intelligence is also constantly busy, organizing illuminating it by frequent comments.

2)Do you agree: "The novel is both the tribute and critique of Mrs. Ramsay"? (Key: Take some clues from the painting of Mrs. Ramsay drawn by Lily Briscoe and the article by Andre Viola and Glenn Pedersen. Can we read Mrs. R in context of the idea of Ideal Indian Woman –

The characters are carefully arranged in their relation to each other, so that a definite symbolic pattern emerges. Mrs. Ramsay pervades the whole book. And no I’m not agree that Novel is both the tribute and critique of Mrs. Ramsay. By only praising Mrs. Ramsay in novel Woolf critique Mrs. Ramsay. She is portrait as human being of great appeal. She is an extremely beautiful woman of fifty, an inveterate matchmaker, and the mother of eight children; she is very near sighted and exaggerates everything; she is a practical nurse and much concerned with the improvement of social conditions. By possessing all the virtue Woolf made Ramsay’s character like an ideal women like Goddess who exist only in myths not in reality.

3)Considering symbolically, does the Lighthouse stand for Mrs. Ramsay or the narrator (Virginia Woolf herself who is categorically represented by Lily)? (Key: Take help from the presentation on Symbolism to connect Mrs. Caroline Ramsay with Lighthouse. Secondly, the narrator / author cannot fully disappear from the novel and thus the stoicism of Lily to paint and thus prove that she can paint, is symbolically presented in stoicism of Lighthouse.

In the novel the writer suggests much more than she directly describes or asserts. The basic conflict of life, like the conflict between life and death, hope and despair, love and hate, social contact and individual freedom etc., are all suggested through imagery symbol. Same way it is also creates conflict that lighthouse symbolically stand for Mrs. Ramsay or Narrator(or lily).
Lighthouse is quest for the values the lighthouse suggests, it is deeply one can see in both the character directly through Lily and indirectly by Mrs. Ramsay.
Books open with sentence in mouth of Mrs. Ramsay  –“ yes, of course, if it is fine tomorrow.” Here If points the uncertainty of life  and tomorrow is hope for fulfillment of quest from lighthouse . And the final sentence by lily in book is “I have had my vision .” However, beginning to end lighthouse symbolically stand for both the character.

4)In the article by Joseph Blotner, two myths are patterned together. Name the myths?
How they are zeroed down to the symbols of 'Window' and 'Lighthouse'?
How does the male phallic symbol represent feminine Mrs. Ramsay? (Key: The strokes of light-beams. . . )

1.The first myth which is patterned  here is of Rhea and Demeter.
First Mrs. Ramsay is compared with Rhea. Rhea is Greek goddess, and her husband is killing all her child but he saves the Zeus. Readers can find same with Mrs. Ramsay as she is also saving James from Mr. Ramsay. Saving in the sense of anger. Treatment of parenting are quite  different in both of them.
Secondly Mrs. Ramsay  is compared with Demeter. Demeter is a daughter of Rhea and goddess of corn and fertility. It is said that when she is in sorrow whole earth becomes barren. Demeter is more worshiped by men than women, same as men are in more need of Mrs. Ramsay than women. Every men in summer house are need the help of Mrs. Ramsay in one or the other way. More importantly Mr. Ramsay and James. Further more the story of "Fisherman and his Wife" if read by changing the gender we can see it is Mr. Ramsay who is more demanding of sympathy then Mrs. Ramsay. Mrs. Ramsay is here to give everyone.

2. The second myth which is described is of Oedipus, who kills his father and marry his mother. 2. The second myth which is described is of Oedipus, who kills his father and marry his mother. In Neo-Freudian psychology, the Electra complex, as proposed by Carl Jung, is a girl’s psychosexual competition with her mother for possession of her father. In the course of her psychosexual development, the complex is the girl's phallic stage; a boy's analogous experience is the Oedipus complex. (Wikipedia) In To The light House,  Mrs. Ramsay and James stand for Oedipus Complex. James has strong love for his mother and strong hatred for his father. Behind it different in parenting of Mr. & Mrs. Ramsay is reason. Mr. Ramsay’s true but bitter nature make James’s nature negative toward his father.

3. Symbolically the lighthouse is similar to the star  and the  hermit of the deck. However, as the star serves as guidance for all those who look to the heavens. Here, if we take Lighthouse or Star as male phallic symbol it suggest that female as hermit (no question) should follow light beams of patriarchy it will reach them to heaven.  This is very problematic reading for feminine.

5) What do you understand by the German term 'Künstlerroman'? How can you justify that 'To The Lighthouse' is 'Künstlerroman' novel?
The künstlerroman   is an artist novel detailing the artist’s growth to materiality. Mainly as painter, writer or musician etc., its origins to the Germanic Romantic tradition of the eighteenth century.
when a generation of writers began to rebel against what they believed to be the confining rationalist structures borne of the Era of Enlightenment.
In To the light house, character like Painter lily and poet Augustus Carmichael both struggled for their artistic growth till the end and finally they achieved best in their field at the end of novel.

6)"... the wages of obedience is death, and the daughter that reproduces mothering to perfection, including child-bearing, already has on her cheeks the pallor of death. One reminded here of various texts by Lucy Irizarry, in which she attacks mothers for being, however unwillingly, accomplices in the patriarchal system of oppression." (Viola). In light of this remark, explain briefly Lily's dilemma in 'To The Lighthouse'

Many of the women in novel ‘To the light house’ either overtly or silently, subvert conventional female gender roles. Lily Briscoe, for example, has no desire to marry, but rather wants only to delicate herself to her work. She is independent and self sufficient. She is able to disregard Mr. Tansley’s chauvinistic comments about women being unable to paint.
In the kind of society outlined in the book, the odds are against a potentially infidel daughter such as Lily. Het fight against patriarchy. In the original text there is line makes  clear that.. Lily’s cry at a moment when she experience aggression by a hostile figure; Mrs. Ramsay! She cried, feeling the old horror comeback _ to want and want and not to have. (pg.219)

7)You have compared the 'beginning' and the ‘ end’ of the novel and the film adaptation of the novel directed by Colin Gregg. Do you think that the novel is more poignant than the movie? If yes, do you ascribe the fact that the power of words is much greater than that of the screen / visuals?

Opening scene of Novel comes in film almost after an hour. It means film maker has to changes in adoption film and this is require too. Especially when novels like ‘To the light house’ because novel have not as many outdoor scene in compare of film. Moreover, novel have not as much dialogue as well as interesting story plot but to make it interesting one must have to made some changes. Overall tone of novel is not bright but in grey shade and darkness so it hard to capture all this things in camera. So I think that novel is more poignant than the movie.

8)How do you interpret the last line of the novel with reference to the ending of the film.
Plays are written for performance and live performance gives freedom to audience where they want to see, camera have limitations of it. Novel is much deeper than movie, video resources have their limitations and film is tip of ice burg.

The ending of the novel is connected with the title of the novel, finally all characters
reached to the light house. In the novel Lily Briscoe said: " she looked at her canvas; it was blurred. With a sudden intensity, as if she saw it clear for a second, she drew a line there, in the center. It was done; it was finished. Yes, she thought, laying down her brush in extreme fatigue, I have had my vision"
In the novel Lily saw the painting of Mrs. Ramsay, she saw an ideal housewife and mother and her confusion of being ideal woman has solved, her blurred vision (Mrs. Ramsay as an ideal woman) is clear now.

"Closed doors, open windows" - lies on the bed and with some sort of satisfaction utters: "Dearest Briscoe, you are a fool"  This is the last line in film. Here, in film Briscoe utters the same feeling in different form of word. By remembering words of Mrs. Ramsay ‘Closed doors, open windows’ find herself fool. It means she finds her vision that…”Nobody is superior. Nobody is inferior but nobody is equal either, people are simply unique. Incomparable.”
And, If we connect both the dialogue, we can understand it more clearly:
"Dearest Briscoe, you are a fool, I have had my vision"

9)What does the catalogue named as 'Army and Navy' signify?
What does cutting of 'Refrigerator'  signify?

The catalogue named "Army and Navy" signifies by its name that war and consumerism, both are connected. Virginia Woolf here may tries to criticize capitalism during her time. And Refrigerator is symbol of change, Technology which changes with time. Refrigerator  preserve thing it is but it’s also stop changes  means it’s not allow to natural process. Dual paradox. Same way Mrs. Ramsay is preserver and shaper of culture.

10)Why did Virginia give such prominence to the tale of the “Fisherman’s Wife”? In particular, why did she weave such a misogynist tale into the fabric of a book which so eloquently challenges received patriarchal notions about the roles and capabilities of women?

Fisherman’s wife the tale can read in double layer. And it’s clear the all above question in reader’s mind. One is that, fisherman’s wife as Demanding wife same story going parallel to Mrs. Ramsay. Female Will is Danger for society is one reading of tale. Rather than the males self assertion is much danger.
Second, is in subverted way not use for women but for men, unreasonable demand made by male, if it is compare with Mr.Ramsay, story changes the meaning.

11)How is India represented in 'To The Lighthouse'?

Autobiography of  Virginia Woolf tells that she is from educated family and her knowledge and various reading help her in her writing. Greek mythology to Indian, she aware about it. In the novel there is reference of India, presents through Carmichael. It shows that Woolf consider India in more spiritual power rather than economic wealth.

Stree Movie Review

‘The myth that women shouldn’t lift heavy is only perpetuated by women who fear work and men who fear women’

Various Myths are exist all around the world and many literature based on it. Nale Ba is the myth about witch, popular in Karnataka. ‘Stree’ Hindi Movie based on this idea. Directed by Amar Kaushik. Genre of movie is Horror comedy so it gives lot of thrills and spills.  In a way Woman cum Witch  fight for her own dignity and love and in the end people worship her by making statue and ‘O Stree Kal Aana’ becomes ‘O Stree Raksha Karna’ Thus, Whole story centered in Four days Pooja in temple and these four days Menfolk lives in Terror by tales of mysterious women, who is comes in four nights of Pooja.

Movie starts with rising of dull sun in quaint town of chanderi. With the running of Vicky (Raj Kumar Rao) camera moves all around in the town, and the language of camera speaks a lot about town.  Everywhere in the town notice on gate that ‘Women come Tomorrow’, it’s the curious beginning of movie.  Vicky has a girlfriend (Shraddha Kapoor) but, her disappearing acts gets  his friends suspicious and they start believing that she could be the Stree who haunting the city for long. Thus, Shraddha Kapoor’s character is a bit of an enigma.

Bookshop owner Rudra (Pankaj Triptahi) treat people how to cope with Stree and haunting act. It spreads humors though he is researcher and want solution from Terror of mysterious women. He tells a story that there was a prostitute who died in her wedding night and her soul still howling. She is finding her love and that is the reason she catches the male of town and leave only clothes behind it. Movie has not single story but stories of every home, how they protect themselves from Stree and change in their routine life, males can not go outside of home in this four nights.

Misogyny  and chauvinism are social evils that exist in societies all around world. Director made a good attempt to talk on this side. Resistance or rebel against male by only Stree but I think women’s resistances made her witch in so called civilization. Here, witch means,  not a good women who fit in stereotypes. Here Director also try to Come out from bollywood heroism and made son of trailer, a good trailer, a good artist in sewing is our hero.

Movie ends with lot of question in my mind that,at last they come back with pride that they cut cue of witch but is it victory for them or only victory for Shraddha?
If Shraddha is really witch then who is the other one whose cue cut by Rakshak? And why Shraddha put it cue in her own hair? To become more powerful? Will she come next year with more strength?

This Summer Vacation...

Students, invest your leisure time in some worthwhile activities rather than just scrolling the reels and playing mobile games. Here is the l...
