Da Vinci Code

This blog is part of my academic work. I try to answer all the questions asked in given task on Dan Brown's 'Da Vinci Code'

Introduction

The Da Vinci Code is a 2003 mystery-detective fiction novel written by American author Dan Brown. It follows symbologist Robert Langdon as he investigates a murder in Paris's Louvre Museum and discovers a battle between the Priory of Sion and Opus Dei over the possibility of Jesus Christ’s marriage with Mary Magdalene.

1. Brown states on his website that his books are not anti-Christian, though he is on a 'constant spiritual journey' himself, and says that his book The Da Vinci Code is simply "an entertaining story that promotes spiritual discussion and debate" and suggests that the book may be used "as a positive catalyst for introspection and exploration of our faith."

Yes of course, I agree with Brown's views on ‘Da Vinci Code' that novel is simply an entertaining story that promotes spiritual discussion and debate" We can do another reading book that Robert Langdon is in search of his own truth and at the end on the path of quest he is alone and at the end he finds truth which symbolically presented that where is the Sarcophagus. So, Robert Langdon is representative of many individuals, who are in search of truth of their own self. Thus, book can be used as a positive catalyst for introspection and exploration of our faith as Brown said.

2. “Although it is obvious that much of what Brown presented in his novel as absolutely true and accurate is neither of those, some of that material is of course essential to the intrigue, and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman has retained the novel's core, the Grail-related material: the sacred feminine, Mary Magdalene's marriage, the Priory of Sion, certain aspects of Leonardo's art, and so on.” How far do you agree with this observation of Norris J. Lacy?

Lacy’s observation is appropriate. What film is trying to show as fact those are just made up theories. But it held the viewers attention as it is unfolding in very interesting way and till the end suspense get created by one another situation. One can say that it beautifully fooled those who don’t have enough historical sense and proofs to prove Brown’s narration wrong or in other words those who don’t know what is Theology Fiction at all. Despite this, I do agree with second statement too, that screenwriter has held the core of the novel till the end, by focusing on Grail, Sacred Feminine, Mary Magdalene, Priory of Sion, and Leonardo Da Vinci’s art.

2. (If)You have studied ‘Genesis’ (The Bible), ‘The Paradise Lost’ (John Milton) and ‘The Da Vinci Code’ (Dan Brown). Which of the narrative/s seem/s to be truthful? Whose narrative is convincing to the contemporary young mind?

I have studied Paradise lost and along with that we studied some part of The Bible too. The Bible is religious book which deals with theology and creator of Earth is God who create everything including Adam and Eve. Similar narrative  in ‘The Paradise' Lost but, Paradise Lost of John Milton's is Theology Fiction and there are changes in it which makes difference.

Despite this, I have studied ‘Da Vinci Code' of Dan Brown. In this, Paris's Louvre Museum and discovers a battle between the Priory of Sion and Opus Dei over the possibility of Jesus Christ’s marriage with Mary Magdalene and protagonist of the novel in search of Murderer of Jacques Soniear found some fact and  truth about Christianity which I found more logical and rational than other two texts.

3. What harm has been done to humanity by the biblical narration or that of Milton’s in The Paradise Lost? What sort of damage does narrative like ‘The Vinci Code’ do to humanity?

As I've discussed Genesis as Theology or religious book with not any scientific proof or evidence but people blindly or faithfully followed what is written in it on name of Religion. We have scientific theory of biological evolution by Darwin, which is more relevant than creation by God. Who creates the heavens and the Earth in six days, then rests …
So, as per my thinking Genesis falsify science and preclude thinking with scientific temperament.

I didn't think that narrative like ‘Da Vinci Code’ does any harm to humanity because It is a theology Fiction and as a part of literature it is far open and gave logical argument to prove it's point about Sarcophagus of Magdalene.

4. What difference do you see in the portrayal of 'Ophelia' (Kate Winslet) in Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet, 'Elizabeth' (Helena Bonham Carter) in Kenneth Branagh's Mary Shelley's Frankenstein or 'Hester Prynne' (Demi Moore) in Roland Joffé's The Scarlet Letter' or David Yates's 'Harmione Granger' (Emma Watson) in last four Harry Potter films - and 'Sophie Neuve' (Audrey Tautau) in Ron Howard's The Da Vinci Code? How would justify your answer?

Apart from Sophie Neuve in Ron Howard’s ‘The Da Vinci Code’ portrayal of all the women characters which mentioned in above question, where we can find female as supporter of male protagonist and Objectification of women body. Camera works as male gaze on women's body. Which is not part in particular book but directors intentionally added scene of women's nudity and use women’s body as tool for catching intention of audience. But, portrayal of Sophie Neuve is strongly connected with theme of women sacredness and director faithfully made not any changes in this theme. Despite this, She is portrait as knowledgeable and rational thinker even, beginning to middle she is in drive position.

5. Do novel / film lead us into critical (deconstructive) thinking about your religion? Can we think of such conspiracy theory about Hindu religious symbols / myths?

Yes, ‘Da Vinci Code' lead me into critical or Deconstructive thinking about my Religion. By Reading or watching one can found that rationality towards Religion or our beliefs toward Religion can be wrong because the roots of Religion are not so strong. As in novel Cryptologist Sophie Nouve’s views about religion are more rational.

I couldn't found any specific conspiracy theory about Hinduism but there are myths and belief in Hinduism which can deconstruct with logical argument.

1. Myths behind women’s chastity during her menstruations period which prevent them to enter in Holly places such as temple and somewhere kitchens too. It can be read in different way that in earlier time, before rise of technology in India fore the sake of women’s health that they can rest during this five days of menstruations, they are not allowed to go outside and kitchen too. But, with time changing the real logic is forgotten and women blindly following it too.

6. Have you come across any similar book/movie, which tries to deconstruct accepted notions about Hindu religion or culture and by dismantling it, attempts to reconstruct another possible interpretation of truth?

There is Hindi movie like ‘PK' and OMG', somehow it deconstruct many accepted notions about Hindu religion and culture or practices done by people on name of religion. Apart from that few years ago, I've read some books of Osho and central theme of that is ‘मानो मत पर जानो’ means search for truth, don't believe on beliefs. Somehow it deconstruct the many myths or prejudices set in our mind on Hindu mythology.
(Though, I am not satisfied with my answer of this question. I will search for better work which deconstruct accepted notions and attempts to reconstruct another possible interpretation of truth.)

7. When we do traditional reading of the novel ‘The Da Vinci Code’, Robert Langdon, Professor of Religious Symbology, Harvard University emerges as protagonist and Sir Leigh Teabing, a British Historian as antagonist. Who will claim the position of protagonist if we do atheist reading of the novel?

If we will do atheist reading of this novel , position of antagonist and protagonist will change. Robert Langdon who find the ultimate truth of Sarcophagus but didn’t reveal to the world and became secret keeper. While to reveal this truth to world and destroy the blind faith of people from Christianity was the prime aim of Leigh Teabing.

8. Explain Ann Gray’s three propositions  on ‘knowability’ with illustrations from the novel ‘The Da Vinci Code’.
a.       1) Identifying what is knowable
b.      2) identifying and acknowledging the relationship of the knower and the known
c.      3) What is the procedure for ‘knowing’?

1) Identifying what is knowable is a process to realize what we actually know. In ‘Da Vinci Code’ Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu both are trying to decode the codes given by Pro. Sauniere, so they both  identifying what they know by their knowledge of their particular field. Then they are applying their knowledge to solve the puzzles and make way for Ultimately truth.

2) Identifying and acknowledging the relationship of the knower and the known. This leads to the knowledge of self. We can again see this in the characters of Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu. When they come to know about their own self and the reason behind their knowledge of particular things. It means the knower found the answers of this question, who am I? And what is one's ultimate search.

3) Ultimately, the procedure for knowing is to look inside and knowing our self. Sauniere was used to laugh upon Robert Langdon, because Langdon was knowing everything but then even he was unknown to the things we can say he was in search of Key and Doors were already  open. But, to get this thing Langdon has to look inside and it symbolically showed at the end of the film that he is kneeling down as  knights. It is like, “Knowledge always dawns when time comes.”

Pulwama Terror Attack

#15 February 2019

છલકાતી મલકાતી મોજ;

નથી ભીતર ભીનાશ થતી ઓછી;
વધઘટનો કાંઠાઓ રાખે હિસાબ
નથી પરવા સમંદરને હોતી,
સૂરજ તો ઊગે ને આથમી યે જાય
મારી ઊપર આકાશ એમનેમ છે….

His simplicity and spark in his eyes touched my heart. I hope that Dhruv Dada also felt happy with us because meeting fans is amazing but meeting any readers is always boost.

Moreover, the organizer of this entire event, Mahendrasinh Parmar  and Student of Gujrati dept. MKBU presented one small and really beautiful play of Labhshankar Thakar named Kudrati.

At the end, I would like to say Thank you to Mahedrasinh Parmar for organizing such wonderful event.

Comparative study of 'Slumdog Millionaire' and 'The white Tiger'.

Comparative study of 'Slumdog Millionaire' and 'The white Tiger'. The film was directed by Danny Boyle , written by Simon Beaufoy and Novel written by Man Booker prize winner Arvind Adiga.

1.Narrative Structure
Narrative structure of both novel and film are same in large part.  Novel and film both have  flashback narrative  technique. The novel is composed of a series of letters addressed to the Premiere of China, Web Jiabao. The writer of these letters, and it is known from  the contents of the letters, is the protagonist Balram Halwai alias Munna, the son of rickshaw puller who designate him in the letter pad as ‘The White Tiger’, a thinking man and successful entrepreneur in Bangalore. Thus, the protagonist quotes from poster and explain line by line , adding further information and also his own observation of that particular situation. The poster is..

“General public is hereby informed that the man in the picture (a faded picture of the protagonist is also attached) Namely Balram Halwai alias Munna Son of Vikram Halwai rickshaw- puller is wanted for questioning. Age: between 25 and 35. Complexion: blackish. Face: Local, Height: Five feet four inches estimated. Build: Thin, small.

Same happens in the movie  Slumdog Millionaire, the protagonist Jamal Malik from Asia's biggest slum. Who plays as contestant in  the show “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?.” There are questions in the show and with each questions there are reflections of his past and some moment connected with it. So, basically there was a parallel structure. Some thing from past and present go hand in hand. The narrative gave it necessary twist so as to incorporate elements to stream of consciousness in both the literary work.

2. Indianness
There is  indianess in both the text, representation of images of Train, Slum and Indian Education as well as religious system and poverty is the major theme or rather to say darkness of India is heart of both the literary work.
But I found that poverty is one of the main issue, which attacking on this all moral or social value of life. While reading “The theme of Poverty in the 21st Century Indian English Novel with special reference to Kiran Desai, Kamala Markandaya and Arvind Adiga” by Neeru Tandon… She beautifully writes that..

It’s the 21st century ,
World has advanced in many ways, yet poverty still cries.
Looking at the little bit with tears in his eyes,
Desperately searching for love, companion and good clothes.
We all know what it clearly indicates and shows,
Poverty.
I see poverty in a Rich man trying to find love,
I see poverty in a well educated man who lacks modesty.
I see poverty in a literate man who respect for poor.
I see poverty in a selfish man who wants more
The world is still imperfect despite all the advancements,
Because there is,
Poverty.

3. List of questions asked in the film. If you have to replace or add a few questions, which questions would you like to add. Remember, questions shall be in-tune with the screenplay of the film.

There was nine questions in the movie. Which are listed as below.

1.Who was the star in the 1973 hit film Zanzeer...
   a) Shah Rukh Khan
   b) Salman Khan
   c) Amitabh Bachhan
   d) Ranbir Kapoor

2. A picture of three lions is seen in the national emblem of India. What is written underneath it?
    a) The Truth alone triumphs
    b) Lies alone triumphs
    c) Fashion alone triumphs
    d) Money alone triumphs

3. In depiction of God Rama, he is famously holding what in his right hand?
    a) A bow and arrow
    b) A sword
    c) A child
    d) A flower

4. The song " Darshan Do Ghanshyam" was written by which famous Indian poet?
    a) Surdas
    b) Tulsidas
    c) Mira bai
    d) Kabir

5. On the American One Hundred Dollar Bill, there is portrait of which American Statesman?

    a) Samuel Colt
    b) Bruce Browning
    c) Dan Wesson
    d) James Revolver

7. Cambridge Circus is in which UK City?
    a) Oxford

    a) Aramis
    b) Cardinal Richetieu
    c) D' Artagnan
    d) Planchet

This is the series of questions asked in Show to Jamal which is somehow connected with his life and in tune of that we come to know about his past. Further, I don't want to add any new questions.

4. On what grounds can you deconstruct the film with reference to post colonial tools / theories
This both work received applause as well as strong criticism for the portrait of modern India. The movie Slumdog Millionaire is as disturbing as it is entertaining because of it view of India through its true picture of poverty and dark picture of India. As Indian if we look at it with post colonial angel we might have many problems like… Slum area of Mumbai, People or life in slum, behave of brown people with white/foreigners, Indian education system and railway station in frame of film remembers that it is established by colonizer.

5. Compare with Texture and Treatment of subject content in film and novel.

Texture and Treatment of subject content in film and novel is similar at some extend, both has glorify darker side of India, Asia’s biggest slum ‘Dharavi’ in ‘Slumdog Millionaire' and Laxmangarh  of Bihar' in ‘The white Tiger'.  Flashback Narrative pattern of the both work beautifully use past and present but, somehow at the end we feel Balram Halwai as not good hero, archetypes of Hero who have pride and heroic characteristics. On other we have Jamal Malik in film who in the show and get his lover too, and he became hero. But he became hero only because there was someone like Salim, antagonist of the film so, in compare of him Jamal is nicer and as per archetypes of literature poetic justice done with death of salim which is absence in novel.

Thinking Activity on Arvind Adiga's The White Tiger

The White Tiger is the debut novel by Arvind Adiga which was first published in 2008 and won one of the most important literary awards, The Man Booker Prize. Novel is an unflattering portrait of India as a society of servitude and corruption. But if, Literature is mirror of life and society, writer should portrait whatever is present in reality and A committed writer consciously draws the attention of the reader towards injustice in society. Adiga is one of them, He expose the ugly but real face of India. So there is question that,

How far do you agree with the India represented in the novelThe White Tiger

I do agree with that the India represented in the novel -The white Tiger. Harbinder Kaur writes in his essay that , Adiga exposes the real but ugly face of India's heart of darkness, particularly the rural India, Indian political system and government machinery. Rural India is represented by the village Laxmangarh, district Gaya, Bihar.
Despite this, Adiga has presented a series of Binary cut in Indian Society—the contrast of Darkness and light, people with big bellies and small bellies, Foreign liquor and Indian Liquor and dream of rich and dream of poor etc., satirize the political and social system in India. Among that all most elaborate Binary cuts is Darkness and Light. The areas by the sides of the river Ganga referred  to as Darkness while the big cities like Bangalore and Delhi belong to Light. Balaram’s obsession with Chandelier is suggestive of his eagerness to be in light, as he writes that, A man in hiding and yet he's surrounded by Chandeliers… There- I am revealing the secret to a successful escape. The police searched for me in Darkness: but I hide myself in light.
Thus, rural areas are physically dark, there is hardly electricity, education and economic wellness, it is backward in all respects, the cities are lighted and rich. Narration of this India in The White Tiger is really represented on real /land of India.

Do you believe that Balaram's story is the archetype of all stories of rags to riches

By portraying Balram’s life, Adiga portraying life of so many Indians like Balram. Who forcibly taken out of study and work for repay the loan taken by the family. If we see archetype of Balaram's story, his early life in village including the short period of his school life and his work as canteen boy in tea shop, later on his experience as driver in Dhanbad in house of a former feudal lord, his experiences as driver in Delhi where he was employed by the landlord's son who had come from America and his life as an entrepreneur in Bangalore after the murder. So, all these narration suggest that he wants money/success by hook or crook. Analyzing the situation we can say that the protagonist is representative of archetype of stories of rags to riches.

Is it possible to do deconstructive reading of the white Tiger how
Before that let be clear that,
What is Deconstruction
To dismantle structures of meaning so as to expose the foundation a upon  which they are built.
To show that conflicting forces within the text itself serve to dissipate the seeming definiteness of its structure and meanings.
To reveal the concepts of objectivity and linguistics autonomy as constructs
To show that a text is characterized by disunity rather than unity.

Deconstruction in novel The White Tiger… Balram Halwai -an anti Hero.

The white Tiger by Arvind Adiga has been termed as Black comedy. On some extend we laugh on half-baked Balram’s act and other side we have deep sympathy for him but as a hero of novel, Balram has not all the quality of Hero. In the article ‘Balram Halwai: An Anti Hero' by Sarika Bajpai and R.N. Shukla they writes that, The central character of such a novel cannot be heroic for a hero is endowed with admirable courage, nobility and moral superiority and is capable of heroic deeds, dashing, strong, brave, resourceful and virtuous. The anti-hero is “a central character in a dramatic or narrative work who lacks the qualities of nobility…

The protagonist of The White Tiger has nothing heroic about him. He is out to shock the reader and society. He has irreverent attitude to religion and religious
symbols so important in Indian life. He shows as much disrespect to the Hindu gods as to Christian God, his Son and the Holy Spirit or the Muslim Allah. He has made fun of the tradition of beginning a story with a prayer to a divine power by saying that he was obliged to begin with “kissing some God’s arses”,.
He makes a fun of people who pray to gods and goddesses with offerings of coins or bigger amounts and demand some or the other blessings in return. In book he clearly writes that.
Every day thousands of foreigners fly into my country for enlightenment. They go to Himalayas, or to Benaras, or to Bodh Gaya, they get into weird poses of yoga, smoke hashish, shah a sadhu or two, and think they're getting enlightened.

Thus, Balram Halwai is an anti Hero who has an unheroic character, he is half baked in knowledge, education in making decisions too, He has no respect for religious or Divine power.

One Night@ Call Centre

This blog is part of my academic thinking activity on Chetan Bhagat's ON@TCC.

Introduction
One Night @ the call center or ON@TCC is a novel written by Chetan Bhagat and first published in 2005. The novel revolves around a group of six call center employees working in Call Center in Gurgaon, Haryana.  It takes place during the span of one night, in which all of the leading characters confront some aspect of themselves or their lives they would like to change. The story takes a melodramatic and decisive turn through a literal Deus Ex Machina , in call of God. Apart from that there is air of realism along with fantasy, Magic realism, chutney fication of words and beautiful narrative technique with prologue and Epilogue.

1)What is popular literature? Is on@tcc popular literature? Illustrate.
Popular Literature is literature that is enjoyed by a large group of reader. A good example would be the Harry Potter series, which is read world widely. In India, one might associate popular literature with the likes of Chetan Bhagat, Preeti Shenoy, Amish Tripathi and etc although most serious readers would hesitate to classify their works as literature because of that shallowness.
It can be seen from the above analysis that All Chetan Bhagat books deal with the problems of the Indian youth and how they tackle it well to reach their goals thus, with the main theme of X-Girl friend, Bad Boss and call from Device , One night @Call center fit into archetype of Popular literature.
More evidence for in support of this position can be found that, The author successfully depicts problems of youth and how successfully they overcome it.

2) What do you understand by self-help book. Is on@tcc self-help book? Illustrate
The time comes in everyone's life, when one need to motivation for live. One can not live without hope and this element of hope provide motivation. But, from where one get that inspiration or motivation? ? ? So, there is thousands of videos and speeches with full of motivational ideas.

Despite this, Books like How to Win Friends and Influence People, The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari, The Power of Positive Thinking, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People etc. are self help book written for self improvement.

Amongst the name of Popular self help book, there are books which include sub plot or theme as self help book. In On@TCC the phone call from God is one of the silent feature in the novel. The conversation with God motivates the group of such an extent that they get ready to face their problems with utmost determination and motivation. Major six character emerge out of danger, they have clear cut goals in their mind after the call of God.

3) Is this novel anti-America? Illustrate it in context of theme of nationalism.

There are many dialogues in mouth of characters which shows strong anti-american ideas therefore yes, this novel is anti American.
Shyam Mehra hates it when the Americans call Him Sam. He hates it even more when his boss calls him Sam too. Mehra is  of the American hating characters from a book.
Despite this, In the beginning there is reference that, “ Remember, 35 year old American's brain and IQ is the same as 10 year old Indian's brain. Americans are dumb, just accept it. And even when God said that ‘Any country obssed with war can't be happy.
for this reasons we can say in context of theme of nationalism that One night Call center is novel with Anti American thoughts.

4) Does the novel have social realism? If yes, illustrate. If no, what did you expect as social realism which is absent here.

Social realism is a style of art, fiction, movies and plays. It describes the daily life of workers and poor people. Social realist artists try to show people and their lives in a realistic way. This means that they often show things which are not beautiful or attractive. They may show people who are elderly, sick, sad, insane or have a disability. This does not mean that a Realist work of art or literature is ugly. It can be made beautiful by the way that the artist or writer creates it.(Wikipedia)

Chetan Bhagat said in his one interview that, “ My books touch the Indian middle class , where I also come from. I understand their problems and can make them entertaining. The book was written to present these issues to the youth but, of course, In my style … with fast paced , dark humor.”

On a different level, this novel is portrayal the number of individuals who sacrifices their creativity and skills and join call centers merely because of the fat pay packet on offer. Apart from that the theme involves the anxieties and insecurities of rising Indian  middle class, including question about career , marriage, family conflicts in changing India. Each major character has their personal woe…

Shyam's woe
Shyam is very upset to learn that Priyanka is engaged to a person called Ganesh, who works at Microsoft in the US because he had dated Priyanka for a long time and He used to feel he was a good for nothing and non achiever.

Priyanka's Woe
Priynka seems happy to got engage with Ganesh Gupta. But Becomes furious when her mother planned her marriage the very next month, which she feels too early. Despite this we feel while reading that she have some feelings of love for Shyam though they broke up relationship.

Esha's woe
Esha is living with her dream of become a Model and got constant failure. She had earlier done a compromise by sleeping with designer to get a modeling contract. However the person turned out to be opportunistic as he betrayals her by telling her she can't become a model due to her height.

Vroom's Woe
He is tired from his parents clash and shocked to learn that his boss Bakshi  cheated him and Shyam.

Radhika's woe
Who loved her husband more than her family but her husband Anuj, betrayals her. And her mother in law was also irritating for her.

Military Uncle's woe
Military Uncle's son didn’t like his father’s interruption in their routine. When Military Uncle’s son and wife leaves the home and went US this leaves Uncle heart broken.

Session with Dr. Jay Mehta

On 15 January, Dr.Jay Mehta deal with student of Eng.Dept. at Maharaja KrishnKumarsinhji University.. As a result of that we learned base of Mass Media Study. Jay Mehta is always  energetic in his speech and with some positive vibes of poetic lines, He introduced us with Mass Media Study. Because Media is as a Fourth Pillar of Democracy. (The four pillars of democracy are Judiciary, Executive, Legislature and Media.)

The Mass Media is playing an increasingly large role in our everyday lives. The term mass media is mainly used by academics and media-professionals. When members of the general public refer to "the media" they are usually referring to the mass media, or to the news media, which is a section of the mass media. And the most common platforms for mass media are newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and the Internet.

Despite this,  He highlighted some of basic points of this study, was like…Television, Radio, Advertisement , cinema and Digital Media as platform of media  communication.

Furthermore, He gave an useful name of writers and speakers for listen and read to more in this area, like Prasoon Joshi, Prahalad Kakkad, Piyush Pandey, Barkha Dutt, Sagarika Ghosh, Shashi Ramavat, Dipak Soliya and few others…
Thus, overall it was an useful session for us. We learned same things with touch of newness.

Result Announcement

Emotions on the day of result announcement...

On the day of results announcement, I participated (or I shared views with classmates) in Ds's column 'Thought for the day' in that I mentioned Steve Jobs one quote that... "Your time is limited so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by Dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.

Apart from that I said few lines about Emotions because the result special DS was full of variety of emotions, and in context of that I took reference of Robert Frost's line that..
“Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” ― Robert Frost

Emotions are fickle. Sometimes they’re clear and brilliant: we’re happy, sad, frustrated, or angry. But emotions can also be complicated, layered, and conflicting. Sure, we’re happy, but we’re also kind of annoyed about something. We’re sad, but we also have something to be glad about.
