Poem

Design' by Robert Frost (1922)

'I found a dimpled spider, fat and white,
On a white heal-all, holding up a moth
Like a white piece of rigid satin cloth--
Assorted characters of death and blight
Mixed ready to begin the morning right,
Like the ingredients of a witches' broth-
A snow-drop spider, a flower like a froth,
And dead wings carried like a paper kite.'
'What had that flower to do with being white,
The wayside blue and innocent heal-all?
What brought the kindred spider to that height,
Then steered the white moth thither in the night?
What but design of darkness to appall?-
If design govern in a thing so small.'

Structure

Frost's 14-line poem is called an Italian sonnet, also known as a Petrarchan sonnet. This kind of sonnet is composed of two stanzas. The first eight lines make up one stanza, while the second stanza is six lines.
Frost's sonnet follows the traditional rhyme structure. The first line, 'A,' rhymes with the fourth line. The second and third lines, 'B,' also rhyme. This rhyme pattern is referred to as 'ABBA' and continues on within the next four lines, meaning the rhyme scheme is 'ABBAABBA' for the first stanza and the rhyming pattern of last stanza is ACAACC.

Evalution of Poem

Design' title itself  raise the question of God's existence or is there any creator of this Master piece work(world)??? Answer is that certainly there is some supernatural element who have plan for everything, this plan called design.

Poem opens with the introduction of Spider. May Speaker notice every day’s movement in nature and in this, He found one Dimpled, white and fat Spider on white heal all's flower. And spider holding a 'Moth', insect or food of spider. Here White spider and white heal all’s flower becomes significant. White in white looks like a peace of satin clothe but, in real it’s blight which destroy leafs and insects. Spider is ready to eat wretch moth.

And dead wings carried like a paper kite’   This line shows the death of moth. Poet gives it metaphor of kite, it’s symbolically represent that without string  kite can not fly at height of sky. It is turning point of poem after that Poet ask philosophical questions like about design of God that, What but design if darkness appall? Here Darkness means not only in context of light but hidden meaning is that unexpected action of life appall us.
